Special Education

Special Education is a key part of AEU work.

A Special Education Consultative Committee of nine members is elected annually at Branch Council to provide advice to Branch Executive on special education matters. The Committee includes teacher, leader and SSO members involved in Special Education across the state, as well as an AEU Principal Officer, Industrial Officer and a Servicing Officer.

The implications for our members of DECD policy and practice in relation to special education are a core focus. An example of this is the advice to not recommend the proposed changes to the Disability Funding reform as presented by DECD.

Member involvement in the One Child One Plan (OCOP) trial is another area of responsibility and will continue as it moves into whole of state implementation phased in over the next 4 years.

The inclusion of the Students With Learning Difficulties (SWLD) Grant in our current Enterprise Agreement is a result of the Committee's active participation during Enterprise Bargaining. This Grant is now embedded within every site’s Resource Entitlement Statement (RES) and is designed to reduce teacher workload.  Members should be consulted in order to provide specific direction to their AEU PAC representative on how best to use this funding.  (See Addressing Teacher Workload fact sheet below.)

Every year a member of the Consultative Committee is elected as the AEU representative on the Ministerial Advisory Committee: Children and Students With Disability (MACCSWD)
